What is proc. mastoideus?

Proc. mastoideus or mastoid process is a bony projection of the temporal bone situated behind the ear. It is triangular in shape and located inferior and posterior to the external auditory meatus. The mastoid process serves as a point of attachment for certain muscles of the head and neck and is filled with numerous small air cells known as mastoid cells. Inflammation of these mastoid cells can lead to a condition called mastoiditis, which, if untreated, can spread to the surrounding areas and cause serious complications. The mastoid process is also significant in the evaluation of certain medical conditions, including mastoid tumors and cholesteatoma.
